Last weekend, while visiting Erik’s cottage, we saw a pair of porcupines, which was the first time I had every seen a while one. The pair were relatively small, but it was certainly a mother and offspring that hobbled under some dark bushes off of the trail we were hiking. Fortunately, neither fired any quills at me while photographing them…. |
In Equinunk, PA.
Although the land recently changed hands, this wetland sits behind my parents house and is home to approximately infinite spring peepers and this snapping turtle. The property was previously owned by the Muscarella’s, but I’m not sure who owns it now. There is a large portion of the wetland that is open and free of the willows, and it is completely covered by Reed Canary Grass with a few ATV tracks blazed through it.
Pat, Allison and I recently participated in the 2nd annual Black Squirrel Triathlon in Kent, which involved a 2 mi canoe down the Cuyahoga River, 2.5 mi run and a 10 mi bike. I don’t know our times or our place… but if I find out, I’ll post it. Here are a few photos from the day, including some of Emma-Lisa, who is a former graduate student and office-mate of mine at Kent.

Eurycea bislineata eggs are attached to the underside of flat-bottom rocks in riffles. One, if not both, of the parents protect and care for the eggs.
