I first though this glob on the underside of a leaf was an egg mass from a frog, maybe a centrolenid. I took a picture, and it appears that there is a caterpillar in the center. Is it alive? A top a 50 ft pillar of shale, an old pine sits, surrounded by a flourishing community of lichens and mosses. As I photographed the stalked, bowl-like lichens, I noticed the dazzling complexity of the community at the base of the tree.
What is this crazy, cliff hanging angiosperm? This spider web holds together the cliff face on which it rests. It reminds me of Hydropsychid caddisfly larva, which weave funnels to capture food particles in streams and have actually been shown to alter sediment transport dynamics. Some cool, soft colors. Check out that tiny insect on the right-edge of the emerging, fungal fruiting body. This juvenile bug has a queer appearance. First of all, it is covered in tiny, blue-ish tufts. Secondly, there are two white ‘eggs’ along its midline. I’m not sure whether either of these structures are actually part of the bug, or if they are from an outside source – fungus/parasitoid. There are no tufts on the [...] I bet Myrmecos knows this guy. I found several that appeared to be patrolling a dead staulk of Joe-Pye weed (Eutrochium) Those spores are very cool. |
