The one on the left approached about 6 inches in length… maybe a Pseudostigmatidae. I think these are Saturniidae eggs. I first though this glob on the underside of a leaf was an egg mass from a frog, maybe a centrolenid. I took a picture, and it appears that there is a caterpillar in the center. Is it alive?
In Campanario, these ants patrol much of the forest. When agitated, they move into a defensive position with their abdomen below them, pointed as a gun. I know some ant do it, so I suspect they are capable of spraying formic acid at offenders. I have a few of these for you, Pat… and Dr. Foote. My soapy-water pan traps were not very effective. |
